When the check engine light comes on in your vehicle whether it’s solid, flashing or just intermittently coming on and then off, your car’s computer produces what is called a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) into its memory. DTCs are used by technicians to diagnose the problem. It’s important to get this checked out as soon as possible. Come by our repair shop in Arvada and let us take a look at your vehicle and we’ll determine the needed repairs.
Your Check Engine light can be activated for a variety of reasons:
- If you’ve just refueled, check to see that you properly installed the gas cap. Loose or missing gas caps WILL cause the Check Engine light to come on – not right away but eventually it will. If the gas cap was left loose tighten it. It will take up to several days of driving before your cars computer is satisfied with your repair. If the Check Engine light remains on proceed to step two.
- Pay attention to all symptoms and characteristics of your car – any information you can share is helpful when you bring in your car for repair.
- Call your Colchin Automotive representative (303-421-5421) to schedule a time to bring your car in for diagnostics.
Any time the Check Engine light is flashing indicates more urgent problems. Driving extensively with a flashing Check Engine light can potentially damage your emission systems, most importantly the catalytic converter. If your Check Engine light is flashing, it is important to reduce your speed and drive the vehicle to Colchin Automotive, if practical. How far to drive a vehicle with a flashing Check Engine light is in question. The best we can tell you is to drive it minimally or have it towed. Believe it or not this can save you money much later on.
